Rhythm of Thought and
Motion
PhD, University of Oxford
Murty Science Fellow, 2025

Dr. Abhilasha Joshi investigates how the brain’s internal representations synchronize with the body’s movements in real time. Using advanced recording techniques that capture brain activity and behaviour at the same time, she tracks how this brain–body synchrony shifts and develops across the lifespan.
Dr. Joshi’s discovery that the brain updates its mental maps in perfect rhythm with our footsteps reveals an unexpected link between cognition and action, reshaping our understanding of how memories form during everyday activities. At the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) in Bangalore, her lab has established state-of-the-art technologies, including cutting-edge electrophysiology setups, automated behavioral arenas, and computational infrastructure. This work could unlock new approaches to maintaining cognitive health throughout life, offering insights into why movement and memory are so deeply connected.
Dr. Joshi returns from world-leading neuroscience centers including UC San Francisco, the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, and the University of Oxford. At NCBS, she is building a research environment that combines scientific rigor with transparent mentorship, encouraging her team to advance both their discoveries and the broader scientific community in India.
